As an experienced Dalhousie Castle wedding photographer, I was honoured to shoot Mya and Sky’s Chinese wedding. This beautiful and historic Scottish wedding venue is located a few miles to the south of Edinburgh. Situated in its own private grounds, Dalhousie Castle is the perfect wedding venue for shooting wedding photos. Lots of interior space for wedding photos when the weather isn’t great. Beautiful grounds to take advantage of when the weather allows.
My coverage of Mya and Sky’s wedding day at Dalhousie Castle started early in the morning with coverage of both of their preparations in the west of Edinburgh. We’d just had three weeks of the perfect sunshine. Unfortunately, by the time I arrived with Mya and Sky, the weather had changed, and we found ourselves in the midst of a massive thunderstorm! No worries, it was still early, and there was enough time, fingers crossed, for the weather to get better later in the day.
Both Mya and Sky were born in Hong Kong. It was great to see Sky and Mya’s father choosing to wear kilt outfits. They both looked great, and Sky was relaxed and looking forward to marrying his beautiful bride. Mya looked stunning in her gorgeous bespoke wedding dress.
Dalhousie Castle wedding ceremonies are held in the castle’s very own chapel. A highlight of many Dalhousie Castle weddings is when the wedding rings are delivered to the best man via one of Dalhousie Castle’s birds of prey. Today the rings were delivered by a beautiful owl. I love capturing photos of this moment as the expressions on people’s faces as the owl swoops onto the best man’s gloved hand is just priceless. A little reward of a bit of food for the owl, then the wedding ceremony continues. Great fun and a highlight of the day for everyone.
Shooting today’s wedding photos at Dalhousie Castle after the ceremony was slightly different than a typical wedding. Usually, I shoot a few group photos followed by some time spent with the new Mr and Mrs.
On a typical wedding day at Dalhousie Castle, the time spent with the newly-weds is usually around 30 minutes, and rarely more than an hour. Apparently, in Hong Kong the newly-wed photoshoot is a really big thing, so for their wedding, Mya and Sky ensured we had lots of time to spend shooting pictures of just the two of them.
This was great, and we had most of the afternoon to shoot beautiful newly-wed photos. As a bonus, the weather had improved enough to allow us to walk around the grounds of Dalhousie Castle. I enjoyed having an extended shoot with Mya and Sky. They were relaxed, fun and we had a good laugh during our time together. Mya even changed from her wedding dress into a beautiful red traditional Chinese wedding gown. This looked amazing against the green backdrop of Dalhousie Castle’s gardens, and some of my favourite photos were of Mya and Sky in the field to the back of Dalhousie Castle.
My time taking photos of this wonderful wedding day at Dalhousie Castle came to an end in the early evening when Mya and Sky departed for their Chinese banquet in Glasgow. This was a beautiful wedding day in every sense, and I enjoyed the mix of Scottish and Chinese wedding elements coming together. A truly unique and memorable day!
