A brief history of the George Hotel
InterContinental Edinburgh The George, situated at the prestigious address of five Georgian townhouses on George Street, has a storied history dating back to the 18th century.
Originally constructed in 1766 during the development of Edinburgh’s New Town, the buildings were part of the city’s most esteemed residences, attracting luminaries such as poet Robert Burns and author Sir Walter Scott.
No. 25 George Street, home to prominent lawyer James Ferrier, hosted literary gatherings attended by renowned figures, including Susan Ferrier, who was hailed as the Jane Austen of Scotland.
In 1840, the main building became the headquarters of the Caledonian Insurance Company, undergoing an architectural transformation by David Bryce.
The distinctive façade, now the hotel’s main entrance, reflects the grandeur of the Victorian era.
By 1880, the establishment had evolved into The George Hotel, becoming a focal point of Edinburgh’s commercial and cultural scene.
In 1905, The George Hotel Edinburgh underwent significant upgrades, remodelling the first floor into public rooms for superior dining and leisure facilities.
Throughout the mid-20th century, the hotel faced challenges during World War II when the ground floor was requisitioned for military use.
After the war, the reception area took shape, and in 1974, the entire site received A-list protection, recognizing its historical and architectural significance.
Today, The George is a testament to the city’s rich heritage, seamlessly blending modern luxury with centuries-old charm.
