A Brief History Of The Marine Hotel In North Berwick
Being an experienced Marine Hotel wedding videographer, we can vouch for this fabulous wedding venue in North Berwick as a stunning historic setting and an absolute dream location for your big day.
If you’re looking for the perfect venue for a wedding in East Lothian, your special day at this iconic hotel promises a beautiful blend of timeless elegance and coastal charm.
Dating back to 1875, the Marine Hotel was designed by the renowned Edinburgh architect Frederick Thomas Pilkington. Famous for his striking style that blended medieval touches with Italian Gothic Revival, Pilkington created some truly spectacular buildings. While the Marine Hotel is a little more subtle than his usual flamboyant work (like Edinburgh’s Barclay Church), it still boasts an impressive roofline of crowsteps, charming turrets, and intricate detailing. Keep an eye out for the unique shell motifs around the building.
Opened initially as a hydropathic institute offering luxurious water treatments, the Marine Hotel soon transitioned into a grand hotel, quickly becoming a magnet for VIP guests. Historic adverts praised its spacious rooms, breathtaking views over the Firth of Forth, and even baths filled directly with refreshing seawater! A delighted newspaper reviewer in 1880 called it “one of the best hostelries we have ever visited,” highlighting everything from the exquisite French cuisine to the then ultra-modern electric bells.
The hotel’s guestbook reads like a who’s who of historical figures, including Prince Edward Saxe-Weimar and Lord Kitchener, whose presence famously prompted HMS Dreadnought to fire a salute as it sailed by. Such royal connections, combined with golfing prestige and seaside beauty, turned the Marine Hotel into a social hotspot. Imagine having a Marine Hotel wedding videographer capture your day at a place once frequented by royalty, prime ministers, and bishops!
Despite several extensions and updates over the decades, the Marine Hotel retains its historic charm and remains a treasured landmark in North Berwick. It’s not just a beautiful setting; it’s a venue filled with character, history, and elegance—ideal for creating an unforgettable wedding video.
How The Day Started As A Marine Hotel Wedding Videographer
The day started with me filming the bridal preparations at the brilliant Marine Hotel.
Lisa and the girls were getting ready in the Honeymoon Suite on the hotel’s top floor.
This suite has spectacular views of the Firth of Forth and North Berwick Law.
The Honeymoon Suite is a generously proportioned room with spectacular views of the Firth of Forth and North Berwick Law.
It was a busy room with quite a few girls getting ready!
Fortunately, I still had plenty of room to move around and capture candid footage of the preparations.
This short wedding video shows the opening chapter of Lisa and Damian’s Marine Hotel wedding video.
The newlyweds chose all the music I used when editing their Marine Hotel wedding video.
After filming many shots of hair being done, makeup being applied, and champagne being sipped, I departed for the nearby Our Lady Star of the Sea church.
Over one hundred guests attended the wedding, which was terrific because nearly everyone present had travelled from Kent.
Many guests were ferried from the hotel to the church in an old red London bus.

After the traditional Catholic ceremony and Mass, everyone returned to The Marine Hotel for the wedding reception.
After what seemed like weeks of wet and windy Scottish weather, we were fortunate enough to have one of the hottest days of the year.
It was great to have glorious sunshine all day long!
A Royal Navy Sea King helicopter flew overhead as the guests and wedding party enjoyed canapés and champagne on the lawn.
The helicopter had been participating in the air show display at nearby East Fortune airfield. One of the guests, an officer in the Royal Navy, arranged this flypast!
After the very entertaining speeches, which included a sweepstake on how long the speeches would last, everyone relaxed in the bar area.
The guests were treated to an ‘ice luge’ ice sculpture, through which shots of Jägermeister or Schnapps were poured.
The recipient of the shots was poised below the ice luge, ready to catch the drink in their mouth.
Or that was the idea – more often than not, the booze ended up over the recipient’s face!
It was great fun filming people doing this.
Everyone was having a real laugh, and the atmosphere was terrific.
My day filming a Marine Hotel wedding video ended with me filming the first three dances.
It’s a fantastic way to end a terrific day as a Marine Hotel wedding videographer!
