Zoe and BillyZoe and Billy

Jonathon and Claire are the loviest couple.. from our very first communication they made us feel special and were so interested in who we are as people! They tailored everything just for us, and had they not radiated such beauty and kindness, we wouldn’t have even known they were there… and for two people like us who HATE getting photos taken, we had a great time and felt so comfortable!

We got married on 31st December, and they gave up their own celebrations with their families to help us capture ours...

We truly hit the jackpot, and wouldn’t ever trust anyone else to capture our special celebrations and moments!

Please don’t pass up the opportunity on having these two look after your special day! Very trustworthy and fantastic value for money.

Jonathon and Claire - we cannot thank you both enough for being the best - from start to finish, it has been a dream to work with you both! If you are reading this and considering booking - DO IT!!

Thank you both SO MUCH for everything, we absolutely love our wedding pictures and how beautifully you have captured our day and the memories we’ll have forever - we are still so blown away by how perfectly everything turned out and on an absolute high!

We also wanted to say how grateful we are to have had you both at our wedding. You were just such a joy to be around and put us both at ease.

You got us and the vibe of the day so perfectly, and our family and friends have also said how brilliant you both were! Thank you so much!!! Helen & Daniel xxx

An Honest Review: The Pros & Cons of City Chambers

micro-wedding guide to Edinburgh City Chambers: A bride and groom kiss outside at their wedding in Edinburgh as guests celebrate by throwing confetti; people are smiling and dressed in formal attire.

The good bits (Pros)

Four rooms, four moods. Go classic with the Alexander Suite, airy and vintage chic in the European Room, all-out epic grandness in the Council Chamber or opt for basic and simple (and easiest on the wallet) in the Wee Neuk.

Wallet‑friendly. A registrar’s office ceremony is hands‑down the cheapest legal ‘I do’ in town.

Walk‑to‑everything. Cobblestones, closes, and castle backdrops are literally outside the door – no taxi meter running.

Short‑notice friendly. Because ceremonies run all day, you can often secure a date just 4 weeks in advance.

And the not‑so‑good (Cons)

Tourist traffic. It’s the Royal Mile; expect onlookers snapping shots of you on their phone. Especially during Festival time (August)!

Strict timing. You get 45 minutes; lateness = stress. Be early to avoid being late.

Registrar roulette. You meet your officiant on the day – no chance to pick a personality that suits you (though to be fair, all the Registrars are excellent at what they do and are experts at making you feel welcome and relaxed).

A newlywed couple smiles and walks through a crowd of people throwing confetti. The groom wears a gray suit and the bride holds a bouquet and wears a light blue dress.

Why we love Micro-Weddings at City Chambers

Because you’d rather spend your hard-earned money on quality over quantity, a micro‑wedding (under 20 guests) keeps the focus on the two of you, trims the family politics, and leaves room in the budget for killer photos, a cheeky dram or two, and that honeymoon on Skye.

  • “We couldn’t be happier…”

…with our photographs and video of our wedding by Love Wedding Photos and Film. We found them on Instagram and instantly fell in love with their work. Due to lockdown we arranged an elopement at Edinburgh City Chambers (after 4 cancellations…) and Jonathon and Claire made our small but special day stress free and captured so many moments that we had forgotten and moments which is great for sharing with our friends and family. Before the day, Jonathon gave us so many options on what we could do and how we could make the most of our time with them. They really know Edinburgh and pick the most beautiful spots. Jonathon and Claire also acted as our witnesses which is perfect for a micro-wedding/elopement (especially with the 5 people restriction). Thank you both again for perfectly capturing our day that we can look back on for years to come.

  • “We’re really pleased with the video”

To be honest, it was never our idea to get one – we had our arms twisted by my mum – and we sat down to watch it last week expecting to cringe all the way through but were so surprised at how good it was and how pleased we are now to have it! (although I did have to admit to my mum she was right!) The quality is great, the sound’s excellent and it’s a lovely reminder of the day. We particularly like the way you picked up on our sense of humour and left some funny lines in on the audio. It really feels like the video has been customised for us rather than made-to-formula which I suspect is the case with other companies!

  • Consider weekday mornings. Softer light, fewer tourists, lower registrar fees.
  • Bring a brolly that matches the colour palette. Rain = romance, but a neon golf umbrella? Not so much.
  • Make sure to mute your phone when you arrive. Trust me on this one!
  • Pack comfy shoes. The Royal Mile and Old Town streets are steep and cobbled; heels can wait in a tote till photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

We are regularly asked the following questions as Edinburgh City Chambers Registry Office wedding photographers.

Can you get married at the Edinburgh City Chambers?

Yes, Edinburgh City Chambers wedding venue is the primary venue for civil ceremonies and registry office weddings in the city. Located on the historic High Street, it offers several stunning rooms, including the opulent Council Chamber and the more intimate European Room. If you are planning a city centre celebration, hiring an experienced wedding photographer in Edinburgh is essential to navigate the busy Old Town crowds for your portraits.

Is there parking at the Edinburgh City Chambers for wedding guests?

There is one parking space within the Quadrangle (one official wedding car only) for the duration of the wedding. However, this is subject to change. The team for Edinburgh City Chambers weddings will let you know as soon as possible if parking is suspended. On-street parking is nearby at Blair Street, Niddry Street, Chambers Street, St Giles’ Street and Blackfriar’s Street, with longer-term parking available at Q-Park Greenside Place and NCP Castle Terrace. Since guests will be arriving on foot in a pedestrian-heavy area, we focus on capturing those candid, “urban-chic” moments of your party arriving and leaving the venue.

How many guests can the Edinburgh City Chambers hold?

The capacity varies depending on the room chosen. The European Room is perfect for intimate elopements and small groups of up to 20, while the grand Council Chamber can accommodate larger wedding parties of up to 120 guests for a ceremony and 200 evening guests. For couples considering a historic setting but looking for a more “fairy-tale” feel, you may also want to browse our guide to the best castle wedding venues in Scotland.

Do I need to provide witnesses For My Edinburgh City Chambers Wedding?

You are required by law to have two witnesses present at your ceremony who are 16 years of age or over and can understand the ceremony. The Registration Department is unable to provide you with witnesses. Your witnesses do not need to bring ID documents on the day unless your chosen witnesses look under 16. If you cannot provide witnesses, you have two options. The first option is to ask a couple of strangers on the street if they would like to witness your marriage ceremony. The alternative that works well for our clients is that, when you hire us as your photographer and have two of us working for you, we are happy to serve as your witnesses at no extra charge. We can supply an additional witness for photo or video packages with one photographer/videographer (contact us to discuss). We recommend scheduling your second witness in advance to avoid stress and inconvenience on your wedding day.

What time should my guests arrive?

Guests should arrive 10 minutes before your Edinburgh City Chambers wedding ceremony starts. Or a little earlier if you would like a few photos before the ceremony begins.

How do I access the Quadrangle during the Fringe Festival in August?

As there is strictly no parking available in the Quadrangle during August, you must access it on foot. The nearest vehicle access is George IV Bridge.

Can my guests throw confetti?

Unfortunately, confetti is not allowed within the Edinburgh City Chambers wedding venue or the Quadrangle. However, you can throw biodegradable confetti beyond the Quadrangle boundary on the Royal Mile. See our guide on confetti at weddings.

Can we open a bottle of champagne to celebrate?

No food or drink can be consumed in any of the ceremony suites. We have photographed newlyweds popping open a bottle of champagne in the Quadrangle and on the Royal Mile.

How much does it cost for Edinburgh City Chambers Weddings?

Ceremony prices start at just £155 for a small ceremony in the Wee Neuk and rise to £615 for a weekend ceremony in the European Room. Note that these prices are correct as of the date of publication and are subject to change without notice; please confirm costs directly with the Edinburgh City Chambers weddings team.

How do I book a wedding at the Edinburgh City Chambers?

You must book your ceremony date directly with the Edinburgh Registrar’s office. Once your date is confirmed, you will need to submit your M10 marriage notice forms no earlier than three months and no later than 29 days before the wedding. Because this is one of the most popular venues in the city, we recommend contacting us to secure your photography and film package as soon as your date is set. If you would like to know how much getting married at the Edinburgh registry office costs, and who to contact to book your ceremony, you can contact the City Chambers wedding team here:

Where are the best spots for wedding photos near the Edinburgh Registry Office?

The City Chambers Quadrangle provides a beautiful, sheltered spot for family photos. However, for those iconic “Edinburgh” shots, we typically take our couples to the Royal Mile, Advocate’s Close, or the nearby St Giles’ Cathedral. As specialist Edinburgh City Chambers wedding photographers, we know the “secret” quiet spots that allow for romantic portraits even during the busy festival season.

Why should we hire a professional photographer for a registry office wedding?

While registry office ceremonies are often shorter, the lighting inside historic buildings like Edinburgh City Chambers wedding venue can be challenging for amateur cameras. Furthermore, the Royal Mile is one of the busiest locations in Scotland. We specialise in professional lighting and “crowd management” to ensure your wedding film and photos look like you had the city all to yourselves. You can view our latest pricing and packages here.

How soon Do You Edit Edinburgh City Chambers wedding photos?

Hire us as your photographer, and you can usually expect your photos to be ready for viewing in less than 1 week. We might take a little longer during the busier summer months, but we’ll always keep you posted on progress. If you are happy for us to do so, we’ll post a few ‘sneak peek’ preview photos within a few days of your big day.

Can we bring the dog?

Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed in any of the rooms at Edinburgh City Chambers wedding venue, except for assistance dogs.

What if it rains?

We embrace it! Bring an umbrella for cover as we head to hidden closes for shelter and make use of nearby beautiful arches and doorways for newlywed photos.

Do you act as a witness?

Absolutely — I sign for free and can also arrange a second witness. Contact me to discuss.

What is the difference between an elopement and a micro-wedding?

The main differences are guest count and hospitality level. An elopement is usually just the couple (and perhaps two witnesses), often held in remote or outdoor locations. A micro-wedding features a small group of VIP guests and typically includes a formal meal or reception. For more details on the most intimate options, see our Edinburgh Elopement Guide.

What is considered a micro-wedding in Scotland?

A micro wedding in Scotland is typically defined as an intimate marriage celebration with 5-20 guests. Unlike a traditional large wedding, a micro-wedding keeps the guest list small, focusing on quality over quantity and often allowing for a more relaxed atmosphere and a higher budget per guest. Many couples choose historic spots like the Edinburgh City Chambers wedding venue for these smaller, meaningful ceremonies.

Can we have both photography and videography for a micro-wedding?

Yes, hiring a combined photo and video team is highly recommended for micro-weddings. Because there are fewer guests, a single, unobtrusive team can capture the entire story without the day feeling like a “film set.” Our combined photography and film service ensures your Edinburgh City Chambers wedding story is told with a consistent style and zero fuss.

Is a micro-wedding cheaper than a traditional wedding?

Generally, yes. By reducing the guest list, you significantly lower costs for catering, stationery, and venue hire. This “saved” budget is often reinvested into luxury elements, such as a high-end wedding photographer and filmmaker, a designer dress, or a spectacular 5-star venue that might be unaffordable for 100+ guests.
