Borthwick Castle wedding venue offers drama, spectacular scenery, and a location just 20 minutes away from the heart of Edinburgh at North Middleton, EH23 4QY. It’s our pleasure to share with you some of the stunning features and appeal of this magnificent Midlothian wedding venue.
We’ve been delighted to have been given the privilege of photographing and filming many happy couples at this wonderful wedding venue on their special day. This castle is steeped in 600 years of history, and you can sense every moment as you explore the castle and its grounds. What better place could there be to say your vows than this?
History of the castle
Borthwick Castle is steeped in history. Constructed in 1430 by Nobleman Sir William de Borthwick, this magnificent fortress was once home to Mary Queen of Scots and survived bombardment by Oliver Cromwell’s army in 1650. You can see the damage sustained during the siege, with the east wall heavily gouged by cannonballs!
Exclusively yours… that is the promise made by the team offering wedding services at the castle. If the idea of getting married in a Scottish castle truly appeals, you’ll be delighted to hear you’ll have the entire castle to yourselves to enjoy on your wedding day.
The versatility of the castle is at your disposal, enabling you to choose just the type of ceremony and setting you desire. The most beautiful rooms are all licensed for Humanist, religious and civil ceremonies.
Couples taking advantage of the stunning setting and interior of the castle but who wish to have a church ceremony will be delighted to hear Borthwick Church is adjacent to the castle gates. The wedding team at the castle is always accommodating and is happy to make the arrangements for booking a wedding at the church, followed by celebrations at the castle.
Great Hall
Undoubtedly the finest feature of the castle, the Great Hall is perfect for larger celebrations. Benefiting from a high curved ceiling, your wedding party can enjoy a banquet they will never forget. The Great Hall is both large yet welcoming, with décor that compliments all styles of weddings. From finger food to the traditional medieval banquet others once enjoyed over the centuries, the Great Hall is the signature location for a classic castle wedding reception.
Garrison
Step inside the Garrison, and you will feel like you have stepped back in time. This is the perfect location for a wedding ceremony fit for royalty, with Humanist, civil and religious ceremonies allowed to be held here. Arranging your finishing touches will be a delight since the Garrison offers dramatic features and historic significance. A wonderful room for every couple’s dream wedding.
State Room
The State Room offers the most elegant décor, suitably chosen to enhance the centuries-old features of the castle and its stone walls. Imagine sitting by the roaring log fire, enjoying a single malt whisky, or playing the grand piano after enjoying afternoon tea. It is the perfect counterpoint to the larger Great Hall, proving that intimacy and romance are possible within this magnificent castle.
Relax in luxurious surroundings
There is nothing more convenient than getting married in beautiful surroundings and then being able to stay overnight at the same venue. If you’ve never stayed in a castle overnight before, what better night to choose than your wedding night?
The castle boasts ten luxury bedrooms, each very different from the others. This allows you to select the one that appeals most. Of course, the remaining bedrooms will also be available for members of the wedding party to book, should this be required. The grounds also include Crookston Cottage, which is suitable for a further four guests to stay in.
The castle is renowned for its Scottish hospitality – something you will be able to sample first-hand if you opt to get married here. The atmosphere, the food and drink, the Scottish breakfast to enjoy the morning after by the newlyweds and the other guests choosing to stay overnight… it all combines to produce memories you will never forget.
The chefs are also known for providing a sumptuous feast to suit your desires, no matter what kind of wedding reception in mind. Whether you choose canapes, a barbecue in the better months, or their signature medieval feast, you’re in for a treat.
After the reception, there will be ample time to explore the castle and have photos taken in many of the delightful and atmospheric settings it can provide. The tree-lined approach to the castle delivers a shady starting point, perfect for newly-wed photos while imagining how Mary Queen of Scots herself would have arrived. The castle’s position atop a knoll means we can take full advantage of spectacular views as a backdrop for some truly memorable wedding photos. Whatever the weather, Borthwick Castle is the perfect setting for a wedding and for the photographs that will enable you to recall the most romantic moments for years to come.
Battlements, turrets, history and style… Borthwick Castle wedding venue has it all. Please do get in touch with us to have a chat about the possibility of photographing your special day in this most special of Scottish castles.
